He played a crucial leadership role during the COVID-19 pandemic at KEMRI, overseeing diagnostics, genome sequencing, and the development of essential pandemic response products such as antiseptics, sanitizers, virus transport media, and PCR kits.
Dr. Amukoye earned his MB.ChB (1985) and M.Med (1992) from the University of Nairobi. He has pursued advanced professional training in lung medicine, including a senior clinical fellowship at the Institute of Child Health in London focusing on Critical Care. He also completed attachment training in pediatric bronchoscopy/respiratory at the University of Saporo and Kyorin University in Japan. His expertise extends to spirometry and comprehensive pulmonary care.
His research interests are extensive, focusing on multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, TB infections, pneumonia, influenza virus, HIV/AIDS, and the development of novel point-of-care diagnostics. Recently, he has investigated the elevated risk of TB in specific populations, such as those immediately post-treatment and HIV-infected individuals, as well as the impact of pulmonary TB on chronic respiratory disease. Dr. Amukoye led a significant study on air pollution and lung health in underserved areas of Nairobi.
Dr. Amukoye has authored and co-authored over 70 publications and several books, and serves as a co-editor for two regional and institutional journals. He holds memberships in numerous professional organizations, including the Respiratory Society of Kenya and the European Respiratory Society. He has also contributed significantly to regional health initiatives as the East Africa Health Research Commission Focal Point Coordinator and through roles in organizations like KCM (Global Fund) and KENITAG.
