Bridging the Gap in PMTCT Knowledge in Mwingi North – A Step Toward Ending Pediatric HIV
As Kenya continues its journey toward the elimination of mother-to-child HIV transmission (eMTCT), with national rates now at 7.28%, according to the 2024 Kenya PMTCT estimates. However, Kitui County stands at 13.3%, with Mwingi North Subcounty contributing the highest at 20.54%.
In response to these alarming numbers, Ciheb-Kenya, through its USAID-funded PACT Imara program, conducted targeted capacity-building efforts in Mwingi North. An intensive training on the three-tier HIV testing algorithm was delivered to healthcare providers from 30 rural facilities, most of which had been identified as struggling due to knowledge gaps in PMTCT and HIV testing protocols.
By equipping frontline health workers with the skills needed to correctly identify and manage HIV in maternal and child health settings, Ciheb-Kenya is playing a pivotal role in helping Kitui County reduce eMTCT rates and protect future generations from preventable HIV infections.
